Network marketing has been around for years. In fact, the success of many companies is due solely to word of mouth endorsements shared between colleagues, friends and family.

Affiliate programs are network marketing for the internet. For the merchant, your recommendation for their products has value. Therefore, merchants are willing to pay for your recommendation. The merchant gets a new, possibly loyal client and you get a one-time or residual compensation. It's a win-win situation.

What do you need to succeed with affiliate programs?

  1. Sincerity. If you know and believe in the products and services that you recommend, your sincerity will show in your endorsement. Anyone who clicks on a link that you have recommended is "taking your word for it" so make sure that what you write is sincere.
  2. Contacts. Whether you have a web site, newsletter or just happen to have thousands of online friends, you will need some means of giving your recommendation for a merchant's product or service. As a universal rule, affiliate programs do not allow you to use unsolicited, bulk email (SPAM) to sell their products or services.
  3. Persistence. Affiliate programs are not a "get rich quick" scheme. However, they can provide a nice residual income to supplement your regular job and for some hard-working affiliates can provide enough income to substitute as a full-time job.
  4. Organization. Affiliate programs usually provide a means of checking statistics online, but if you join more than a few, then you will need some means of organizing all of your linking URLs, usernames and passwords.
